‘These are my thighs!’ NMC Choral Director Dermot Tutty’s choir workout

This year’s NMC will see participants form a 100-strong choir and perform two choral works: Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances and Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2. For many of the young, bright-eyed members singing, it’s their first time working in a choir setting. And who better to introduce them to the experience than renowned choral director, Dermot Tutty?
Crackling with energy and dripping with excellence, Dermot has managed to do amazing things with the newly formed group—getting people to open up and discover their voice for the first time.
As we ramp up to the 2026 choir’s first outing on Saturday 10, here’s a behind-the-scenes look into the weird, whacky, and wonderful methods of our esteemed NMC Choral Director.

Catch Dermot and the choir in Concert 2 at 7:30pm, Saturday January 10 in Elder Hall for an electrifying performance of Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances. And don’t miss their final performance the following week of Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe Suite No. 2 on January 17 at Elder Hall.
