The Monty Wain Award for Lower Strings has been created to honour the life and legacy of Monty Wain (1999 – 2020).
Monty was a gifted double bass player, pianist and composer from Hobart, Tasmania. Beginning at age 13 in Young Symphonists, Monty participated for eight years in the breadth of the AYO experience at National Camps, Seasons, MSO Fellowship and International Tour 2019.
Since his tragic passing in February 2020, Monty’ parents Nara Dennis and Gary Wain worked together with AYO to bring a special scholarship fund to life which specifically supports lower string players.
Monty was known for his enthusiasm and generosity towards younger aspiring musicians, and to his peers. The aim of this award is to continue and to celebrate this spirit by supporting developing lower string musicians in their journey through AYO projects.
The Monty Wain Award for Lower Strings will be awarded for the first time later this year.
