From Strings to Science: Tanya Monro’s Inspiring Journey
Tanya Monro, mother of three Australian Youth Orchestra rising stars, has a unique journey that didn’t unfold as she initially imagined. Although she was drawn to music from a young age, an unexpected opportunity ultimately led her into the world of science—and she hasn’t looked back since. Now serving as Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist, Tanya balances both passions, sharing insights on the importance of mentorship and the special significance of the REPLA.Y.O project. She also reflects on the joy of performing alongside her husband at Elder Hall, a stage filled with treasured family memories.
How did you transition from music to science, and how do you continue to nurture your passion for both?
As a teenager, I was convinced I would become a musician—either a cellist or a pianist. However, it wasn’t until I won a pipe organ scholarship that I crossed paths with an incredible physics teacher. That experience made me realise that mathematics, a subject I had always loved, is the language of the universe, and physics is how we ask the universe questions. I was hooked. But music has always been, and remains, a fundamental part of my life.
What advice would you give to young musicians contemplating a career change into fields like science or technology?
Young musicians today no longer face the stark choices of previous generations. It’s now possible to pursue portfolio careers, blending music and science at a high level and flourishing in both. My advice is to find mentors, supporters, and peers who will challenge and inspire you to reach your full potential.
What excites you most about coming to REPLA.Y.O at National Music Camp next year?
This project fosters connection between diverse people who are brought together by a shared love of music and commitment to AYO. I’m especially excited to perform alongside my husband, David, on the same stage—Elder Hall—where we’ve watched our three children perform so many times.
