AYO February Season 2018
Last month the Australian Youth Orchestra took to Victoria for our AYO February Season concerts, travelling to Melbourne and Bendigo for two orchestral showcases under the baton of Dutch conductor Antony Hermus. Antony was visiting Australia for the first time, and reportedly found great fulfilment in working with the orchestra over the course of the program; noting particularly the musicians’ unwavering energy and resolute music making.
“I think Mahler, Mendelssohn and Ravel would have been proud hearing their works played by such a musical group!” – Antony Hermus
The musicians opened the concert with Mendelssohn’s beloved Hebrides Overture, and were then joined on stage by pianist Andrea Lam for an elegant performance of Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G. The second half comprised Mahler’s fourth symphony, and featured a refined solo from soprano Penelope Mills in the final movement.
