All applicants for AYO’s Media and Communication (formerly Words About Music), Orchestral Management and Sound Production programs are offered an interview and asked to provide a portfolio. Composition applicants are asked to provide a portfolio only.
Interview requirements
All Orchestral Management, Media and Communication, and Sound Production applicants will be interviewed by video call by the program tutor and a member of the AYO staff following the due date. Interviews are roughly 15 minutes long and will involve a short discussion about your career aspirations and reasons for applying to the program.
Portfolio Requirements
Applicants will also be asked to provide a portfolio of supporting materials. Portfolios and interview results are confidential and will not be discussed outside AYO, nor will they be made available to any other organisation.
Curriculum Vitae This should include your educational background, work experience, interests and any significant publications (Maximum 3 x A4 pages)
Written statement 1 Tell us about your aspirations within the areas of broadcasting, music journalism, criticism, marketing, communications, etc., and explain your reasons for applying to the program (Maximum 250 words)
Written statement 2 What do you consider to be an effective use of social media to communicate about music? (250–500 words)
An example of excellent writing One written piece that you consider to be excellent music journalism. This could be a concert review, feature, passage of prose from a book etc. Provide a brief statement discussing what you like about your chosen piece and what makes it well-written (250–500 words)
Curriculum Vitae This should include your educational background, musical background, and any previous experience in the area of composition.
Written statement Tell us about your aspirations within the field of composition, and explain your reasons for applying to the program (Maximum 1x A4 page)
Two recent compositions For each composition, please provide a full score and, if available, a recording (a midi recording is acceptable)
List of compositions Please include a list of your compositions to date and provide details on any relevant performances of your work
Curriculum Vitae This should include your educational background, musical background, employment and any previous experience in the area of arts administration or orchestral management
