Media and Communications Blog

I am quite a sentimental and sensitive person, which means leaving national music camp has been a very difficult task. Time flies when you’re having fun, and I have had so much fun.

Being in the hive mind of Australia’s best young musicians has been the most amazing experience. Every person here has a unique story and their contribution to camp over the past two weeks has been astonishing to witness. The orchestras sound fantastic, and to the standard of professionals – I believe I share that opinion with a number of people. There is a sense of collegiality and kindness that surrounds camp; of meeting new friends and catching up with old ones. The joy we all have around making music and sharing it fills me with such energy and hope. It is so awe-inspiring what has been achieved in two weeks, and everyone involved should be so proud of themselves.

It was so inspiring to see REPLAYO on Sunday the 19th, with musicians from all across Australia coming together to play at camp again. With players from the 50’s all the way to the 00’s, the vivacity and joy that roared from the orchestra was fervent. I was so glad to have made it, and I hope that it happens again; I know how much it meant to each person to come together at camp to play.

I will be very honest, before coming to National Music Camp this year I was at a slight stalemate with my thoughts on my music career. I am soon to graduate, and for sometime now I have not known where my place in classical music is. At times, it felt as if there were many avenues in music to venture down, but also not enough. But camp has shown me the amount of possibilities there are. It has also shown me my own capabilities, which for the last year I have squashed internally in order to “fit in” with the world around me. I know that these qualities are unique and important; I wouldn’t have found those qualities again without the media and communications program. Being surrounded by such outstanding people for two weeks makes me want to stay even longer, but all good things must come to an end.

As the saying goes, “don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened”. I will be smiling for the longest time because of National Music Camp.
