As we prepare to come together again for another season of concerts in April it is with great sadness and fond memories that the Australian Youth Orchestra pays tribute to the personal, musical and academic achievements of double bassist Monty Wain who passed away in February.
Monty has played an important role in the AYO through his participation in many years of programs, and as a contributor to so much of our on- and off-stage activity – from chamber music to large symphonies, to radio interviews and photo competitions. Most recently Monty was a member of the AYO’s magnificent bass section for Wagner’s Parsifal and an unforgettable international tour to Europe and China in 2019. Monty shared much more than his musical talent whenever he was at an AYO program, and went about every activity with his characteristic willingness, wit and good humour.
More than 900 young musicians have connected with Monty through his AYO participation. Their countless fond memories speak to the impact Monty had upon them as individuals, and the immeasurable contribution he made to the AYO community as a whole.
We extend our deepest condolences to Monty’s parents, Nara and Gary, who are also much-loved members of our AYO family. Our thoughts are with the AYO community as together we remember our friend and colleague Monty Wain.
