Ahead of our highly anticipated REPLA.Y.O reunion concert at National Music Camp 2025, we had the pleasure of catching up with Elizabeth (Libby) Shade (née Grierson) and Frederick A. Shade, who first attended NMC in the 1960s. Now, after 58 years of marriage, three children, and three grandchildren, this dynamic duo is returning to relive the magic of their AYO days. Both enjoyed illustrious careers in the orchestral world—Frederick as Principal Piccolo of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for 30 years and Libby as a flautist with the MSO and Opera Australia. Their story is a testament to the enduring bond of music and the unforgettable experience of AYO.

How do you feel about the upcoming AYO reunion?

Frederick: Libby and I are very excited to hear about the reunion of former National Music Camp and AYO members. It’s happening in Adelaide next January, and it brings back so many wonderful memories. We both attended seven Music Camps and two AYO seasons. The camps were such fun. We loved the music, the camaraderie of fellow students from across Australia, and, of course, the inspiring tutors.

What memories stand out from your time at the camps?

Libby: The conductors and tutors were incredibly helpful, and we had the opportunity to play chamber music at afternoon soirées, which was always special. I remember having renowned flautists like Neville Amadio and David Cubbin as our tutors. One early camp in Geelong stands out—my orchestra was conducted by Georg Tintner, who was deeply dedicated to Bruckner. We performed part of Symphony No. 4, which was unlike anything I had heard before and left a lasting impression.

What lasting impressions did your AYO experience leave on you?

Frederick: In AYO, we were conducted by Sir Bernard Heinze and John Hopkins. Performing Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 and Australian compositions for the first time has stayed with me all these years. I can’t wait to relive those memories when we return to Adelaide for the reunion. I’m curious to see who will be there!
