For the second year running AYO had the fantastic opportunity to work with the Dandenong Ranges Music Council. The Dandenong Ranges Music Council is an arts organisation that supports, facilitates and teaches community music. In a special collaboration, AYO musicians rehearsed alongside the Ranges Young Strings group ahead of their performance in September.
Last year’s program allowed young flautists, violinists, violists, cellists and horn players to have an ‘orchestral experience’; students received tuition from AYO players and performed in a private concert. It was exciting to be able to create another opportunity this year for the Dandenong Ranges Music Council’s musicians. This year, the musicians worked towards a clear goal, which was to prepare Dandenong Ranges Young Strings students for their September performance, which featured the piece ‘Toy Symphony’ for string trio and percussion. AYO musicians included violinists Rebecca Adler, Edward Antonov, Maddie Cowell, Emma Martin, Estelita Rae and cellist Timmothy Oborne. Our 6 tutors worked alongside 10 young violinists and 2 cellists over an exciting afternoon of rehearsals. We are grateful for the help provided by conductor Rosie Burns, who made sure that the project was running smoothly!
This collaboration was generously supported by the Robert Salzer Foundation, and the AYO is extremely grateful to receive this support. This project was not only beneficial to the Young Strings musicians, who were able to receive guidance, ask questions, and draw inspiration from more experienced performers, but to the AYO musicians, who were able to gain further experience in teaching music.
