Australian Youth Orchestra Camerata
Tour to USA and Canada
In 2001, Camerata Australia undertook a two week tour to North America under the direction of Kirsten Williams, Associate Concertmaster of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Prior to their departure the ensemble held three concerts in Sydney including a ‘Farewell’ concert in the City Recital Hall, Angel Place. Australian music was the focal point of the repertoire for the Camerata Australian tour to Canada and the USA and the itinerary included a range of performances in a variety of venues. In Boston, the ensemble performed Seasons, a new work for marimba and strings written by Australian composer and Chair of Australian Studies at Harvard University, Professor Barry Conyngham especially for this project. The Festival runs for two weeks each February and every second year the Festival profiles the people and work of another country. In 2001 the Festival profiled under the title “Winterlude 2001 – Gateway to Australia”. Camerata Australia performed at the Canadian Museum of Civilisation in Quebec during the Festival. Camerata Australia also visited Washington DC and performed in a series of events in and round the Australian Embassy including a VIP recital and dinner at the Ambassador’s residence and a concert on the Millennium Stage in the John F Kennedy Centre for the Performing Arts.
