About

Instrument: Viola

AYO: 2026

Alex was born at a very young age and began his life as a musician not long after. Trying his hand at percussion and violin before settling on the viola, he soon joined a string orchestra and never looked back.

Fourteen years later, Alex now plays as principal viola with the Queensland Youth Symphony and was an Emerging Artist with the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra in 2025. He has performed with The Orchestra Project, The University of Queensland and Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestras, the Young Mannheim Symphonists, and has attended AYO’s National Music Camp since 2023.

When he isn’t scraping a bow across four strings, Alex holds one of eight contracted positions with the Schola of St Stephen, is a regular guest with choirs across Brisbane and regularly performs and records across south-east Queensland.

In his spare time, Alex works casually as a teaching academic in computer science at The University of Queensland and contributes to ongoing research in the field of static analysis. He is just shy of completing his Bachelors and is looking forward to further research in the field.

Other than practicing and writing code Alex also enjoys rock climbing, cycling, medium-format film cameras and trying to find old LPs of classical music to add to his collection.
