Deakin Darby is a Brisbane-based classical double bass player, with a passion for ensemble and orchestral performance.
Originally hailing from Bundaberg, QLD, he commenced his career in ensemble performance with the Bundaberg Youth Orchestra, and later the Bundaberg Sinfonietta, led by highly accomplished musician Barry Davis (ASMF, Principal coranglais RPO, LSO). Deakin moved to Brisbane in 2020 to begin his studies at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, during which time he has had the privilege of studying double bass performance under the tutelage of Marian Heckenberg, Dušan Walkowicz, and Phoebe Russell, graduating recently with a Bachelor’s degree in Classical Music Performance with Honours. In 2024, Deakin was chosen as an Upbeat Artist with Camerata, Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, and in the years since has been involved in numerous concerts, ballet seasons, and opera programs with the ensemble.
Deakin has also fostered a keen interest in performing across a variety of musical styles, having played guitar and bass guitar in several local bands, and is always aiming to experiment with his musicianship across different genres and sounds.
