Horn

Lucy Smith has just completed three years at the Melbourne Conservatorium studying with Carla Blackwood. First learning the piano and trumpet, Lucy began learning the horn in late high school with Rafael Salgado, instantly falling in love with it. Highlights of her musical life so far have been playing Mahler 1 on tour to Singapore and Malaysia with the Melbourne University Symphony Orchestra, performing Mahler 5 with AYO in 2024, and participating in AYO’s National Music Camp in 2023 and 2024. While she obviously loves the late-romantic, horn-heavy works of Mahler and Strauss, Lucy also has a particular soft spot for the symphonies of Mozart and Haydn and will often finish off her days with Mozart’s ‘Jupiter’ Symphony blasting through the speakers in her practice room, playing along with the second horn part. Lucy loves the teamwork required to play in a horn section and hopes to one day play professionally in an Australian orchestra. She also has a keen interest in playing historical horns, and her ultimate dream is to play with some of the incredible period instrument ensembles we have in Australia.
