Sculthorpe’s involvement with AYO dates back to the seventies, when he was commissioned to compose Music for Japan specifically for the Expo ’70 in Osaka during the 1970 International Tour. Peter wrote in 1983 that ‘Rehearsing Music for Japan with John Hopkins and the AYO gave me the most pleasurable time that I have ever spent with an orchestra.’

An AYO life member, Sculthorpe once commented to one of AYO’s founders, Maslyn Williams, that ‘I enjoy writing for the AYO… everything they do is touched with love’.

We are privileged to have had the opportunity to work with such a generous person and look forward to sharing Peter’s music with many more generations of young musicians.
