This week at National Music Camp I became a French horn player! No, not really. But I did manage to get up-close to the fun. Join me as we have a look back on their rehearsals with the Bishop orchestra…

Horn players Jethro and Henry are features in the latest AYO Mic’d up video where we attach microphones to our musicians and see what they really have to say. In the case of the horn section, it seems like they love their jokes.

“Why did the percussionist hate their salad?

“Because it doesn’t have any.. BEAT-root”

🥁 Boom-tish! 🥁

And of course, we’ve all heard the many variations of Beethoven hating on his chickens… BACH BACH BACH

Though it seems that the horns are the funniest section in the orchestra we forget that they can channel their inner journalist and ask reflective questions.

Henry leans in seriously to the real questions: “Do you prefer stopped or muted horn?”, “Do you think I can do this passage in one breath?”.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a youth orchestra rehearsal without references to James Bond…

Jokes and horns aside, we are ticking into the final hours of music camp. I realise that it is hypocritical of me not to have a camp highlight (as I have been interviewing people with that exact question!). But, I feel that there are too many to choose from: late night bakery runs, writing in our computer room turned MAC HQ, and of course trying to absorb as much information as possible from all our wonderful tutors and participants.

I am incredibly grateful that I’ve had a chance to experience national music camp as a Media and Communication participant and I can’t wait to write more about music in the future.
